Understanding the Nutrition Standards

Overview

The nutrition standards embody the principles of healthy eating outlined in Canada's Food Guide, and are intended to ensure that the food and beverages sold in schools contribute to students' healthy growth and development.

As you work your way through the content of this module, it will help you to:
  • cover image of Canada's Food GuideBecome familiar with the nutrition standards categories (i.e., Sell Most, Sell Less and Not Permitted for Sale).
  • Become familiar with the Food and Beverage Groups.
  • Interpret information found on a food label (i.e., Nutrition Facts table and ingredient list).
  • Assess and categorize food and beverages by comparing nutrient criteria to the nutrition standards.
